Það er öflug stofnun innan Sameinuðu þjóðanna sem hefur áhrif á menntun, vísindi og menningu um allan heim. Samkvæmt eigin yfirlýsingum beitir hún sér einnig fyrir friði.nTil dæmis hlaut fyrrverandi kanslari Þýskalands, Angela Merkel, friðarverðlaun UNESCO [Félix Houphouët-Boigny friðarverðlaun UNESCO] á Fílabeinsströndinni árið 2023. Alþjóðlega dómnefndin rökstuddi verðlaunin með viðurkennandi orðum. „Allir dómnefndarmenn voru snortnir af hinni hugrökku ákvörðun hennar árið 2015 að taka við yfir 1,2 milljón flóttamanna, sérstaklega frá Sýrlandi, Írak, Afganistan og Erítreu. (...) Þetta er arfleifðin sem hún skilur eftir sig.“ Falleg arfleifð sem fólkið ber nú afleiðingar af! En það er ekki nóg.
